Grief is the road to abundance and intimacy.

Grief is the road to abundance and intimacy. When we grieve, when we humble ourselves, we open to community, we open to the vast bounty of the earth. When we lose control, when we get close to death and loss we open to interbeing, to receiving, to giving and to relationship.

We remember the value of life, we remember who and what we love and what is really important. We remember who we are and why we came here. Grief brings the death of the small self and surrender to life’s majesty.

When we learn to grieve together again, our grief may have the capacity to heal our culture and to embolden us to listen to even the most hard headed people. Our grief may embolden us to listen to the grief and pain of the ones we find to be the most difficult. Grief and regret are not things to be avoided, they are the music that cuts down to the core of our being, they are our praise for life in another form.

Just smiling and being positive won’t bring abundance by itself, abundance needs the fecund space of grief to fill it. The great treasure of life, comes when we allow grief, when we allow ourselves to receive, when we become vulnerable but powerful, when we give ourselves and allow ourselves to be filled. Then the emptiness created by grief allows a larger intraconnection field of life, the larger ecological self, a larger force of nature, to move through our body, to use our body for its expression.

Then it is not us acting, it is not us speaking, we experience ‘sacred laziness’, which is different from ordinary laziness in that it involves complete accountability. We experience non-trying, non action, the Gods move through our body and the wild animalistic speech of the ancient ones, the speech of the mountains and rivers flows through us.

We become a flow-through of the earth’s sentient dreaming intelligence. And everyone who hears us speak then will experience the trembling of the Gods, will weep heartfelt tears which will feed the spirits of the land and increase its bounty.
In our culture we can often see great cruelty meted out to the poor, the downtrodden, the oppressed and the homeless. Curiously, instead of lifting these people up and recognizing them for the great gifts and insights that they are bringing, we establish punitive measures which harm them even more.

What is the reason for this bizarre behaviour? We have projected onto the poor and onto minority groups and refugees our disavowed grief and regret, which we repress and don’t want to face. When we learn to come to grieve again as a collective, when we honour our tears, we will create a culture which includes and offers abundance to everyone, including minority groups and the oppressed.

Eventually, due to the river of our tears, entire empires will dissolve and new continents and new cultures will open up. Our grief will return to us like an errant part of our own soul, like a refugee fleeing to us from some distant warzone and our love will accompany it like a brother.

When grief is fully experienced there is total accountability, total Saturnian responsibility. We didn’t create all the troubles of our life, many of them pre-existed our lives or the formation of our adults selves, but we are accountable for how we respond to them. Not everything is our fault, but we are accountable for how we respond to it anyway.

Its easy to say: “Yes, its ok, whatever I do love or God is always there” or some other platitude. And there may be some truth to this, but grief remind us that things end, time happens in the mortal world, and actions have consequences. Unfashionable as it is, if we don’t surrender to the bounty of life, if we run from grief and thus from our real treasure all our life, it will have consequences.

One reason why people generate or ‘manifest’ lack in their lives is because their unconscious/superconscious dreaming ecological Self is trying to remind them of and draw them closer to grief. So one way to consciously bring more abundance, to align the unconscious and conscious, is to consciously bring more humility and grief in our life.
When we befriend death, regret and grief we befriend abundance. We may unconsciously fear that unless we push ourselves and live up to certain standard we will die or be abandoned, but in fact what needs to die is this small scarcity-based self. We may need to feel and process the difficult emotions and body experiences which underlie this scarcity based self.

We may fear abundance because we fear it will be difficult, another ‘task’, another standard we have to comply too, but the experience of abundance is often enormous ease, effortlessness, majesty, grief, trouble, gift and humility and it is this huge ease and humility that we both fear and deeply need and desire.

It is not that when we open to abundance there will be no problems or troubles. Within this abundance there will be troubled ground, there will be conflict. There is no escape from that, but we can draw upon the resources of community and of the earth to help us, we can tap into the medicine powers behind our problems and convert them into power.

I remember my dream that I dreamt at Monkton Wyld eco-community when the primordial all consuming witch, the great initiator Baba Yaga appeared to me and said:

‘If you don’t fuck me right now I will fuck you, then kill you and eat you.’

Then she turned into a beautiful woman.

Then she turned into a hideous demon with multiple mouths and eyes. I said: ‘I’m still going to fuck you even though you are a hideous demon.’

Then she turned into a rotting corpse. I said ‘I’m still going to fuck you even though you are a rotting corpse.’

Then she turned into a huge spiral galaxy and I said: ‘I’m still going to fuck you even though you are a galaxy.’

Then she turned into the entire universe. The entire universe was present in my room, immeasurable heavens, worlds without end were being created.

I said ‘I’m still going to fuck you even though you are the universe.’

What is this dream trying to say? Some of is best to remain a mystery and to gleam and glisten in the dark, but a large part of it is the message to adopt the attitude of becoming aroused by all experiences, by everything I have co-created with the universe, even the darkest and most terrifying and taboo parts. I was being told to remain steady with vast embodied presence in the face of everyone and everything.

Baba Yaga, the great initiator was telling me to ‘fuck the universe’ and to say ‘Yes’ to all life, to penetrate all problems and fears and find the medicine power and the gifts that live under them.

Just doing affirmations and ‘manifesting abundance’ won’t bring abundance by itself. To manifest abundance we need the space to process loss or sadness, to find the medicine power behind our fears and struggles. The space of grief allows a cornucopia of wild gardens, soul friendships, vast wealth shared and used for the good of all, heartful storytelling, animalistic bodies, open weeping and rivers of tears and uproarious celebration to flow through us.

Grief brings an opening to intimacy with wild rivers and moorland, coral reefs, sparrowhawks, bluebells, curlews, swaggering badgers, tumultuous waves of mallow, blackthorn blossom, sea beet, sweet briar, samphire, heather and rock rose.

Grief leads us down to the sea where deer and otter walk on the beach, where dolphins and great shoals of silver bass and basking sharks swim near the shore. Grief leads us to that miraculous shore where a hearthfire is burning and all our soul friends, all our spirit helpers, all those who we have healed and are alive and full because of us, and all those who have healed us, are gathered and waiting for us.

In the celebration, around the circle of fire, in the vast weeping, the flow of tears and the joy, we find community, reconnected to the circle of all life

The forest garden communities of the ancient future

Many of us dream of another more abundant, sustainable, earth based world which may come into being after our industrial growth culture has run its course. What will this new world look like? Perhaps it would involve co-operation with the earth’s intelligence rather than struggle against it; it may involve abundant ecological economics, regenerative technologies and a return to our respect for our bioregional place-based relationship with our local ecoystems.

Perhaps we will move from the industrial growth culture to a world where much land is left to open to wild nature and many of us live in regenerative ecovillages or ecological housing co-ops linked by travelling caravans, where magnificient traditions of storytelling, ancestral connection, nature awareness, grief ceremonies, council, dance, song, trauma healing, gardening, wildcrafting, holistic science, communication with the non-human world and the sentient intelligence of nature, myth, ecobuilding, ceremony and conflict resolution can be rekindled. This process of transition has been called many names, Joanna Macy called it a Great Turning from empire to earth community.

It is of course completely uncertain if we will ever get to such a world. Right now it is like we are travelling across a narrow bridge above a perilous abyss. We may have to just put one foot in front of the other, to reach out and support the person behind us and to reach out to the person in front of us and allow ourselves to reach out to be supported

If we do reach the other side it will be not as individuals acting alone, but rather through individuals acting together as communities and communities acting together as collectives. In some ways this new world may also exist now, although it is more rarified, not just gathered in one location but spread out across people and places across the world.

In my life I have had many different relationships to this possible new world. Each new relationship has been precipitated by some terrifying inner death and rebirth process, which perhaps mirrors in a microcosmic level the entire macrocosmic historical process itself.

Firstly as a young activist I tried to PROTECT the growing seed of a new world by resisting and fighting against the people and socio-economic forces which maintained empire and ecological destruction and by advocating for and giving voice to people who’s voices were suppressed in some way.

Later I EXPERIENCED for many years in microcosm this more intraconnected abundant, earth honouring, playful wild way of living whilst I lived on eco-villages and produced food for the people there as a permaculturalist and organic gardener.

Then I went through a phase where I COMMUNICATED through writing and speaking to as many people as I could, synthesizing the most useful and effective means I had encountered in rewilding, regenerating local ecosystems, creating community and envisioning a new socio-economic paradigm

Then I went through a new, more satisfying and effective phase where I endeavoured to EMBODY this new world by creating ceremony in nature, helping people to find vision, to find the power and medicine within personal and social problems, to connect with the ancestors and the sentient intelligence of the earth as a direct visceral embodied sensory experience.

Over the last few months I have gone through a painful chaosmic vortex of inner forces, as some new way of being has tried to birth itself through me. The next stage which has been incubating in me for some time, and will come into being now, will be one where I help to CREATE THE PHYSICAL FORM of this new world in the form of co-creating a network of interconnected eco-villages which may form the skeletal infrastructure of the world to come, the forest garden communities of the ancient future.

By becoming aware of your inner body sensations and experiences you become an extension of the earth’s self awareness bringing itself back into balance.

Merely by becoming aware of your inner body sensations and experiences and the body’s dreaming intelligence you become an extension of the earth’s self awareness bringing itself back into balance. You become a flow through for our intraconnection and the embodied intelligence of the earth. Separated from our essential earthbody essence we attempt to reclaim primal unity through frenetic striving towards an imagined goal that hovers somewhere above the earth. But this goal can never be reached. In our inner life our frenetic striving manifests as stress and struggle and on the macroscopic level it manifests as economic growth and environmental destruction. In both cases the result is harm done to our bodies and to the earth.

We don’t need to struggle or damage ourselves to be whole. We are already whole, even though we are also paradoxically incomplete. Everything we need is already present or near at hand. We can experience our deepest essence now in the form of mountain like responsive ferocious, unwavering body-based presence and caring, powerful sensual and nurturing love. We can experience it in our coming together to care for each other or for the local bioregion, in our ceremonies, in our working through conflicts, in our supporting each other in times of difficulty, in our mutual empowerment and in our sharing of our myths and stories. May all beings learn to touch their deepest essence with a strong, warm and tender hand. May all beings be reborn as their great ecological connected Selves. May all beings occupy their deepest and most courageous soul. May we sing songs of victory over tyranny and injustice. May we become the guiding light back to the abundant and magical wild garden

You become what you do with your focus and your intention.

You become what you do with your focus and your intention. If you spend your days with people you don’t feel connected with, if you spend your life in a relationship with a person you don’t really want to be with, if you spend your life working on a part of your business that is not particularly important, this is your life. These acts are what comprise your time here on earth.

If you spend your time micromanaging your life or someone else’s life or if you spend a large part of your day scrolling on facebook or checking emails you may to experience disappointment. If you spend your time feeding your addictions or numbing yourself you sre likely to experience loss and grief at some point.

If you spend your time with people you deeply connect with, if you minimize your checking emails and facebook scrolling and maximize your human connection time, your joyful learning, creating, gardening, community building time, your earth based time or whatever is close to your deep body-soul-being then your life may be quite different.

Surrender to the other life that is waiting for you. You don’t have to force yourself, just follow your real joy with fierce determined focus and intent and let some greater power work through you. If you live in this way, you will spiral upwards; even more love will come into your life.

Your real talents and powers are right there under your nose, you have had them all along. The treasure is buried in your back garden.

If you locate and work on the most important, the most courageous, easeful and soul-uplifting human or earth connections or parts of your business that you can, then you may begin to take flight and experience freedom. If you focus on the things that really serve life on earth then your life may begin to take on the contours of your dreams and your deepest embodied soul.

Don’t react, respond.

Don’t react, respond. The internet wants you to react, not respond.
The entertainment industry wants you to react, not respond.

The political system wants you to react, not respond.
The military industrial complex wants you to react, not respond. The advertising industry wants you to react, not respond.

Facebook wants you to react, not respond. Everyone who is caught in the world of reaction wants you to react. All abusers want you to react.

Everyone who is in pain but who don’t want to face their pain wants you to react, not respond. The whole world of suffering wants you to react, not respond.

Turn the world upside down and don’t react. Break the cycle and create something different. Rebel against the world of reaction. Act counterwise to the world of suffering like a force of negentropy.

Be the big Self (or develop a strong ego as Neo-Freudians might say, or a non-self as Buddhists might say) and don’t react. Be in the space between stimulus and response.

In the space between stimulus and response is your character, your humour, your awareness, your creativity, your love. In the space between stimulus and response is your embodied soul as it manifests in this world.

In the space between stimulus and response is the end of your suffering, the counterforce to war and the solution to the agony of the world.

War

In my life I have had the strange fate of unintentionally meeting or getting to know several soldiers or ex-soldiers. Years ago, one man even came up to me randomly on the street after he had returned from Afganistan and started talking about his experience.

From reflecting on these experiences I have learned the following:

1 That the basic natural human instinct is not to kill other human beings and that main purpose of military training is to function as a mechanism to overcome this basic human instinct.

2 That going to war fulfills many deep archetypal needs in a man’s psyche for excitement, brotherhood and a sense of purpose. If we want less war we somehow need to make peace as awe inspiring, heroic, strange and mythical as war is. Men need to gather together in warrior brotherhood. Men need to go intentionally into the wilderness to listen to their own inner impulses and to find their calling and sacred purpose in life

3 At the moment the attraction of the military to young men is that it appears to have a monopoly on values such as discipline, focus, self cultivation and so on. If we want less war, discipline, focus and the cultivation of warrior values need to become widespread in everyday life and applied to peaceful egalitarian non-violent purposes.

4 That war is a substitute for being able to express both our vulnerability and our aggression. War is a substitute for not being able to express our most frightening, socially unacceptable and hidden feelings

6 That war is at root a substitute for non violent confrontation with people we don’t like or parts of ourselves we don’t like.

Before becoming a member of parliament

Before becoming a member of parliament all politicians should have to spend a period of twenty years undergoing psychotherapy, healing their childhood and ancestral trauma, learning to meditate, learning to dance, studying conflict resolution, working with homeless people, learning to grow their own food, visiting survivors of wars fought on behalf of the Euro-Atlantic civilization in other countries and spending time alone in nature.

The reason you may not be accepted fully by society is not due to a lack or insufficiency in yourself but rather a fear on the part of the mainstream culture of your immense shining gifts.

Has it occurred to you that the reason you may not be accepted fully by society is not due to a lack or insufficiency in yourself or in your gifts but rather a fear on the part of the mainstream culture of your immense shining gifts? Your immense radical hard won and wilderness strewn luminous gifts maybe a terror to the mainstream society.

You may take this terror as a rejection or a devaluing or shaming of your gifts and in a sense this is the case and in a sense it isn’t; in a sense its a misperception. It is the holy terror of your gifts which compels the mainstream culture to disparage them.

But under this terror their may be a longing, a lustrous shining grief filled need for your gifts. Your strange gifts may be that very medicine which the culture as a whole needs to resolve its problems and conflicts. Your gifts may be what the culture needs to heal its wounds.

You, ragged wanderer, are the one who is able to feel all the depth of our immense pain and transform it into beauty and medicine, you are the wine we thirst to drink and the bread we long to eat; you are frightening truth and you are the balm for all our pain.

Your gifts may be like a sun, a sun that has been placed in a cage. If it so happens that you are rejected and your gifts devalued, recognize that in a sense the rejector is merely a threshold guardian like the monstrous carvings of demons that stand outside the holy temple.

You must pass by these guardians to enter the initiation temple and make your offerings and your offerings to the people and to the Gods. Pass the wasteland and the threshold guardians outside the temple; this wasteland is like the apparitions which appeared to the Buddha prior to his enlightenment, they are like the wasteland outside the castle of the Grail. Recognize the worth, the value the sufficiency, the love of the wyrdness, the diversity that is your essence, your beauty.

Now open to the tribe’s return gifts. You don’t have to strive and struggle and ‘try’ forever to prove yourself worthy of the tribe’s love. Just simply see the beauty, feel the trust in the sufficiency of your wyrd, your beingness and the tribe’s return gifts will flow, will be drawn towards it like a river to the sea. Within the temple, they will rain wild, strange, unusual abundance and bounty upon you.
