The endless ascent towards some perfect place may be deluding us. The endless search for some false transcendent state, something higher, some perfect state of personal power, strength, approval, wealth, status, economic growth, transhumanism or spiritual development looks promising, but what if this is not leading us towards some promised land, but towards a barren wasteland?
What if the source of life is simply not found there, but is found when we descend downwards towards our vulnerability, towards sensory embodiment, towards our relationship with our ecology, towards the powers behind our shadow energies, towards grief and life with all its troubles, magnificence and imperfections?
Perhaps it is our vulnerability not our perfection that will draw our soul community towards us. Perhaps our quest for perfection and ascent will in fact lead us away from the sacred fire where our soul community is waiting for us. Perhaps our attempt to reach some perfect status or safety or health or spiritual state before meeting our sacred lover will in fact ensure that we never meet them, or never come into relationship with them. Perhaps it is our vulnerability, not our perfection that will draw us into the warm embrace of our greatest lover.
Perhaps our vulnerability and our grief and joy and love will shine out like a beacon fire and draw our true loves towards us. Perhaps it is our vulnerability and our intimacy with life which will enable us to redream our human presence on the earth into a regenerative, mutually beneficial relationship with the beings of nature and with each other.
Instead of ascending further we might need to go back the other way. Stop the ascent and instead descend downwards into paradise. Descend downwards towards your vulnerability, towards relationship, towards your grief, towards your uproarious joy, towards your imperfection. Descend downwards towards your sensual body, towards your relationship with local animals and plants and find the circle of warm hearted community who have always been waiting for you.
Don’t run away and be alone again, don’t just run away to that high timeless place, don’t run to that retreat, when your soul family are all here waiting for you, right here, or not far away. Do something wild and outrageous and be with community instead. Come down to the great, celebratory tear-filled feast of life, the house of the world. Your soul community are here waiting for you, you don’t need to be alone again. Give up the desire for immortality, ascent and perfection and instead choose vulnerability, imperfection, embodiment, mutual empowerment, community and intimacy.
