Perhaps you might shame your self for feeling lazy or ill and not wanting to do your job or your appointed tasks. But also consider that as a large majority of tasks and jobs in the industralized world contribute towards economic growth rather than towards the growth of community and the restoration of the ecosystem. As economic growth in a debt based economic system is a major driving force behind escalating wealth disparity, ecological destruction and resource depletion, please consider that your laziness and reluctance to participate in consensus reality tasks may not be some pathology or something to be ashamed about, but rather a manifestation of your own great Self, your body wisdom and the earth’s sentient intelligence communicating with you. Your laziness or illness may be a manifestation of your body and soul’s desire for a deeper, more embodied, more regenerative, more heartful, more community based calling, service and presence in the world
The ‘problem’ with our imperfection, failure or troubles are not that they are really a problem in themselves but that we’ve forgotten or lost the capacity as a culture to see, value and welcome the immense gifts our problems may contain. We have been shamed to perceive that good can only come from a kind of predatory achievement, rather than from seeing the soul building gifts that come from fallow times. We have forgotten to find the medicine powers hidden behind problems, the heart opening potential in unknowing, the community building gifts in inefficiency and the beautiful new experiences and perspectives that can be unleashed by unusual trickster events that change the order of all things.
Do we have to suffer? A certain amount of suffering is an inevitable part of life but also at the same time suffering can be reduced by connecting with the mythbeings, essences and powers that are behind life troubles, illnesses and social problems. We might need to go deeper into our embodiment and sense into the sensations, emotions, movements, dreams, images that accompany our problems, including even subtle barely perceptible somatic factors such as tones of voice, eye movements muscle tensing or untensing or stretching and unstretching.
We might need to bring tenderness and fierce awareness all the power imbalances, anger, rage, sadness, despair, grief, hope, wildness, ancestors, diverse polycephalus values and points of view, deep body states and myth beings, that live behind our social and economic problems and find a some way to give them a voice.
We may need ritualized spaces where we can dance, embody and dream more deeply into the powers and sentient intelligences behind our problems. The powers behind our difficulties and problems are seen as Gods and spirits in many traditional cultures, and often in such cultures the way to resolve the problems were to ‘feed’ the Gods and spirits. Perhaps in the modern world we might refer to the powers or spirits behind our problems in a phenomenological sense as non-local emergent physically embodied inter-species collective psychological phenomena. But however we refer to them, it seems they need to be fed, and the way to feed them is with collective community based embodiment, beautiful action in the world and with awareness.
The spirits are there causing a problem because we are ignoring them or unconscious of them, there is some aspect of ourselves or of our ecology that we are ignoring or unconscious of; we are starving them of awareness and of intoxicating fierce and beautiful embodiment. The difficulties problems and suffering we experience can be seen from a certain point of view as an attempt by the Gods and spirits to raise the power or medicine behind the problem above the threshold of conscious to attract attention to the power behind the problem and to attract attention to themselves.
We can suffer less if we actually consciously embody these ferocious powers behind the problems. This is why we may need to actually dance, embody, dream more deeply into these primordial powers in ceremony, in conflict resolution and in our fierce intentional and focused communal actions in the world.
Instead of suffering from the nightmares of history and from body problems we can get behind the powers that make history in the first place and live out the impossible, wild and ferocious powers of the dreaming superconscious in our bodies and on the land. We may need to intoxicate the Gods with beauty, to express such going-under, such imperfect, heart rending grief-filled beauty in our dance, ceremony, words and acts in the world that we fully express, satisfy, feed and embody these primordial world creating powers
Some of us may spend our lives waiting for approval from another person or from the world. But perhaps it is not their particular task to give it, perhaps we need to give ourselves blessing and approval. Perhaps instead of trying to get blessing or chasing after it, we may need to open ourselves to receive it from others, from life and the earth.
We might spend our life waiting to be ready. But perhaps we are supposed to do things when we are not quite ready. We may learn to do the things by going into the unknown and doing things we don’t yet know how to do. In order to be ‘born’ into a new stage of life we may need to move into unknowing and do the seemingly impossible.
The small self which thinks they needs to know what to do before they do it, and thinks they need approval to do it, may need to die and go under, so something more alive, larger and more connected can be born.
One of the reasons why there are so many people who experience , uncontrolled overwhelming altered states of consciousness (what the mainstream culture calls insanity or schizophrenia) in our culture is because of the suppression of the dreamtime and the immense pressure of social conformity. Not enough of us are spending time processing the collective unconscious, stepping outside of consensus reality or getting in touch with the dream world and so the task falls to a few pariahs who are completely overwhelmed by it. We all need to be a little more ‘crazy’, a little bit more like our dream self and process a little bit more of painful, terrifying or exhilarating aspects of the collective unconscious to take the burden off those who experience extreme uncontrolled altered states of consciousness
For eight miles down to the sea there are waves of buttercup, bluebells, mallow, sea beet, sweet briar, samphire, heather, rock rose, wild orchids. An Oak tree wraps its roots around nearby sea-worn rocks as if involved in vast and slow love with its surroundings. A cool stream runs amongst the Ash trees. The land is dreaming and intelligent. It speaks in the unfurlment and illumination of a billion virgin neurons into my mind like a tree growing backwards into the darkness. It speaks in the calm flame in my heart and blood
On the wild shore there is a piece of the spinal column of a dolphin and a tiny blue butterfly. Beneath the sea unknown to man shoals of silver gleaming bass move towards the shore as the sun descends. In the heat, the sea is dreaming the return of fin whales, humpback whales and bluefin tuna to these waters. It dreams the return of man as animal and as sustainer of life. The land is dreaming the return of bison, boar, wolf, bear and wolverine. Here already, in secret, deer come down from the forest and walk on the beach.
There’s some specific calling for you, some numinous dream you can bring forth into the world which only you can unravel, and in a sense you are this dreaming, it is a expression of your essence, your body, your singularity, your fierceness, your medicine power, the particular and unrepeatable pattern of connection with life which comprises your being. When you be this, when you speak in this way, move in this way, see in this way, feel in this way, taste in this way, express in this way, create in this way even the hills and mountains will reflect and extol your orgasmic body, they will support you in your troubles, your acts may cause unknown and unforeseen reverberations to pass through the immanent net which connects everything together and cause emergent change to happen far beyond your sight. Your being will repair the cracks in the fabric of existence, lost souls will jump back into people’s bodies in your presence, demons will spontaneously transform into helpful spirits, you will help to bring the earth’s sentient dreaming intelligence and the human world back together.
We’re often told to get rid of victim consciousness as soon as possible and there can be good reasons and intentions behind that. But what if the part of us that is like a ‘victim’ contains important gifts and powers when we bring tenderness and embodied awareness to it? Maybe by getting rid of or trying to get above the ‘victim’ prematurely, we may be casting out some essential treasure. When the body states, movement patterns, mythbeings, postures, emotions, belief patterns and sense feelings associated with the ‘victim’ are held with tenderness and body awareness and fully processed they may reveal the way to ferocity, power and the ability to make boundaries, or they may show us our tenderness, our vulnerability and our ability to be compassionate to others.
Saying ‘NO’ to perfectionism, focusing on tiny details, task orientation and approval seeking may be also saying ‘YES’ to intimacy, abundance, community, mutual empowerment, synergizing and merging energies with others, the willingness to tolerate and even to find power in chaos and trouble, a sense of being ‘good enough’ and sufficient, the orgasmic body, the senses, community, the earthbody, the instinct that lives in the solar plexus, the heart, a wider vision, relaxed determined focus, spontaneous responsiveness, shamanic powers, the ability to enjoy conflict, the ability be with emotions however difficult they are, shameless sexuality, playfulness, magic, the non-human world, the intersubjective connection world, the big Self and an opening to the power of a larger force of nature moving through you
Perhaps equally important or sometimes more important than considering a person’s philosophy or belief system may be too listen to or sense a person’s emotions, their ancestors, their unconscious, their physical embodiment, their inner sense feelings, muscle tension, their movements, tone of voice, spaces in words, speech rhythms, posture, energy, microvariations in breathing, eye movements, their cultural background, their relationship to world events and any ghosts and spirits that may be present
